Both provide authentication, but the integration boundary differs. Better Auth fits auth into your TypeScript backend; Supabase Auth connects identity and JWT sessions to Supabase's Postgres and data APIs.

## Verdict
Choose by where data authorization will run and who operates authentication. Better Auth suits a backend you control; Supabase Auth suits identity integrated with Supabase's data layer. Skip browser-to-database access until grants and RLS are tested, and keep secret/service-role keys on trusted servers. Migrating users and active sessions needs its own plan.

## Pick Better Auth when
- Your TypeScript backend already owns data access and you need configurable auth alongside it
- The organization/plugin model fits and you can operate the auth service and database-backed schema

**Skip Better Auth if:** you need a managed auth service and cannot operate the library's backend and database-backed schema.

## Pick Supabase Auth when
- Your app already uses Supabase and identity should feed its tested Data API and row policies
- You want the hosted auth service, while owning application permissions and SSR cookie handling

**Skip Supabase Auth if:** you need organization management that you cannot implement and test with application membership tables and policies.

## What actually differs
- Deployment: Better Auth — A library in your backend, with supported database adapters and plugins; Supabase Auth — Use the hosted Supabase service or operate the open-source auth server yourself
- Identity and sessions: Better Auth — Database-backed auth tables and cookie sessions, with optional caching or stateless configurations; Supabase Auth — Auth records in a Postgres schema and JWTs sent through client SDKs or APIs
- Application data access: Better Auth — Your server verifies sessions and authorizes queries; adding the library does not create row policies; Supabase Auth — Auth tokens integrate with Data API requests; you write and test grants and RLS policies for exposed tables
- Organizations and permissions: Better Auth — The organization plugin provides membership, invitation, and access-control building blocks; Supabase Auth — Model application memberships and permissions in your schema and enforce them in RLS or trusted server code
- Operations and license: Better Auth — MIT core; you maintain endpoints, database migrations, email delivery, and upgrades; Supabase Auth — MIT auth server; hosted service costs and limits are separate, while self-hosting makes operations yours
