Read a subnet boundary

Network+: Networking Concepts
Original starter lesson / sources checked 2026-09-30

An IPv4 /26 leaves six host bits, creating blocks of 64 addresses. Under conventional IPv4 subnetting, network and broadcast addresses are reserved.

For 192.168.10.64/26 the range is .64 through .127, with ordinary host addresses .65 through .126.

An address outside the local subnet normally needs a router. Evaluate the mask alongside the IP rather than assuming matching first octets mean local reachability.

Hands-on lab

  1. Write the network, first host, last host, and broadcast for 192.168.10.128/26.
  2. Check your result by counting the size of the address block.
