Recovery objectives describe tolerated data loss and tolerated time without service. RPO addresses the data-loss window; RTO addresses restoration time.

Recovery procedures must account for databases, permissions, configuration, and external dependencies. A database backup alone may not restore the whole service.

Exercise the procedure in a separate environment and compare measured outcomes with the objectives.

Hands-on lab

  1. For an invented service, choose an RPO and RTO and explain the business tradeoff.
  2. Design a restore exercise that verifies both data and application access.
